Inconsistent automatic login

Ask Ubuntu Asked by JRUK on February 26, 2021

I’m on Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS, Gnome 3.36.3, and I have automatic login enable in my User profile settings. I have followed such as advice as:

  • turned the automatic login option off and on again with reboots in between
  • in /etc/default/grub set GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet"
  • in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf set AutomaticLoginEnable=True and AutomaticLogin = [my name]

As I said it is inconsistent, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Checking login errors I get:

: xauth: unable to generate an authority file name
 05/12/2020 16:08:08 -auth guess: failed for display=':0'
05/12/2020 16:08:08 -auth guess: since we are root, retrying with FD_XDM=1
 05/12/2020 16:08:08 -auth guess: failed for display=':0'

I have a dual monitor setup and both are usually off when the computer boots, one is a traditional monitor via HDMI out, the other is a USB monitor. I have no graphics card, I just have a Intel i7 on a Gigabyte motherboard, so the Nvidia issues I’ve seen shouldn’t apply.

The computer reboots daily due to some of the programs I have running it seems to be best to have an overnight reboot. Some days it’s logged in, some days it’s not, no real reason why as far as I can tell.
