we [go]/[are going] to the beach every day

English Language & Usage Asked by Prooff on November 28, 2020

Sentences:

  1. While we are here we go to the beach every day and dine out every evening.

  2. While we are here we are going to the beach every day and dining out every evening.

Question:

Are the tenses in bold correct in the above two sentences? Are both versions equally natural? Thanks.

One Answer

When you say we are going, you are using the present continuous tense. When you say we go, you are using the present simple tense.

According to English Language Centers,

We use the present simple tense when we want to talk about fixed habits or routines – things that don’t change.

We use the present continuous to talk about actions which are happening at the present moment, but will soon finish.

So, if you are talking about habits while on vacation, you should use the present simple tense.
