Would you classify 'being + past participle' as passive or gerund?

English Language & Usage Asked by Mura84 on July 11, 2021

Upon reading the English translation of Murakami’s 1Q84, I’ve come across two sentences with the use of ‘being’ + past participle that I can’t seem to be able to classify:

It’s all very painful – as painful as actually being cut with a knife.

And

She imagined people being mauled by this big dog and found herself scowling.*

Would you classify these sentences as passives or gerunds? Perhaps something else entirely?

*I changed some words due to sensitive content, but the structure is intact.
