Access Z values of GML features in QGIS

I want to extract the Z values of polygons from a GML file with a python script. I can’t use the field calculator, since you can’t edit GML files in QGIS. Ideally, I want to extract the Z values from each node and then take the mean of these values and store it in a list in Python.
