Renaming attributes/fields in shapefile attribute table using QGIS?

Geographic Information Systems Asked on March 31, 2021

I would like to rename some fields in my attribute table:

Like rename XRF_N3in something else. It seems quite a easy issue but I don’t find any information about how can I do that… I’ve QGIS 1.8 in Mac Mountain Lion.

Since 2.16, you can edit field names in the layer properties when editing is enabled:

Renaming is possible using Table Manager plugin (http://plugins.qgis.org/plugins/tablemanager/)

Since QGIS 2.16 you no longer need a plugin to do this - you can double click a field name in a shapefile from the vector layer properties window and rename (set the layer as editable first)

No need for plugins. There is something called the Rename field tool.

It can be found by:

  1. Go to the top-most menu bar ProcessingToolbox
  2. In the Processsing Toolbox, go to Vector TableRename field
  3. The Rename Field window will open Rename field window
  4. In the Input layer field, select the layer that has the attribute table
  5. In the Field to rename field, select the field you want to rename
  6. Type the New field name
