Why did my garage door opener stop working?

Home Improvement Asked by Ann F on March 4, 2021

It didn’t work, so I put a new battery in the remote. Worked for several days, but then not today. Motor of opener did not engage (not a problem w/rollers etc.) I already checked the sensors and power source etc.

the most common issue with a garage door that just suddenly stops working is the motor capacitor. Its an easy and cheap replacement part. a usual symptom if a capacitor going bad, is a garage door that starts to get slower to open. sometimes this gradual slowing happens at such a slow rate that most people don't start to notice until it finally stops working. The best place to find a capacitor for you particular opener is inline or at your local Garage door repair shop. I can bet the repair shop will charge you FULL RETAIL price. I can't promise you that's whats going on with your particular situation, but I can say that most our issues with a sudden stop of an opener has been the capacitor. I hope this helps. Good luck to you

When the remote stops working but the opener still works from the wall switch and/or keypad, it's the transceiver in the opener that has gone bad. It's either part of the main control board or if separate, probably the most expensive board in the opener from what I've found.

For far less money, I bought a web switch that connects to my home wifi and mounted it next to the wall switch, wired into the same circuit in parallel. So now I use my phone to open and close the door, which actually works from farther away.

Do you have anything blocking the laser beam of the door sensors? If this plane is intruded upon by so much as a narrow garden hoe or some item, the door will not open or close.
