Cannot get groups from LDAP

Server Fault Asked by OscarCy on December 7, 2021

I have an LDAP server with serveral groups and users.

I setup a fresh machine with Ubuntu 18.04 and installed LDAP client on it.
I am able to fetch the users with getent passwd and also login with a user su – username.
But Im not able to getent group. This is a crucial for my SMB setup.

This is the user’s structure

This is the group’s structure

What am I missing here?

One Answer

  1. You'll need nss_schema rfc2307bis in ldap.conf.
  2. The LDAP server needs to run an rfc2307bis compatible schema.
  3. You'll need to add the posixGroup objectClass and the gidNumber attribute on to your groupOfNames group. (If you're running an rfc2307 schema this will fail as both groupOfNames and posixGroup will be structural objectClasses, rather than having psoxiGroup be auxiliary as it is in rfc2307bis.

Also, you really ought to see about encrypting the connection between your client and your server, esp. if you're passing authentication information.
