Headphones not working on Ubuntu20.04 LTS

The problem is simple: no sound is coming when I plug in my headphones. But the solution is turning out to be more convoluted than I thought. I have tried most of the things suggested in other answers like:

• sudo alsactl restore to restore the original settings
• Using alsamixer to change the volume levels
• Removing the old pulseaudio config files
• Overriding the default handler of my earphones port to prefer earphones

As you might have guessed, none of this has worked. Moreover, my system is actually recognising the device when plugged in, and shows the headphone icon, but I cannot hear any sound. Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated.
