Why can't I set my default font on google docs?

Question

On google docs, I make the font that I want, go under normal text, and select update normal text to match. But EVERY TIME I open a new docs, it's not the font that I set as normal text.

What could be the problem?

After pressing "Update "Normal Text" to match"
Go to "format", "paragraph styles", "options", and then press "Save as my default styles"
